  • About transferring your domain to Square

Transferring your third-party domain name to Square allows you to manage both your domain and website from your Square account, making billing for everything your website needs easier to manage.

    Before you begin

    • You can transfer your third-party domain to Square from Square Dashboard.

    • You will need access to your current domain host account. Confirm with your current domain host what the domain transfer process should be from their side to make sure you don’t miss any steps.

    • Connecting your third-party domain to your website before you transfer can minimize any potential downtime for your site while the domain is transferring. Learn how to connect a custom domain to your website.

    • The domain transfer requires a one-time payment that automatically extends your existing domain subscription by one year. Most domain transfers will take approximately 7–10 days to complete.

    • Making any changes to your registrant contact information (name, address, email or phone number) results in a 60-day registrar lock, during which you won’t be able to transfer your domain. If you wish to transfer your domain right away, do not update your registrant contact information. This is not a policy set by Square, but a restriction put in place by ICANN—the international, non-profit organization that oversees the registration of domain names globally.

Square can only accept “.com,” “.net” and “.org” domains for transfer. Domains from Register.com and Squarespace cannot be transferred to Square. Most third-party domains can still be connected to your Square website.

    Transfer your domain to Square

    1. Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Online > Websites.

    2. Click Website > Domains.

    3. Click Connect domain.

    4. Click Use a domain I own elsewhere, type in the domain name you want to transfer and click Verify.

    5. Click transfer your domain and follow the step-by-step instructions to complete the purchase process.

    6. With your current domain host, follow their steps to:

      • Disable WHOIS privacy protection

      • Disable the registrar lock

      • Ensure your contact email address is correct and you have access to it

      • Get your domain authorization (EPP/transfer) code from the current registrar and enter it in Square to authorize the transfer process

    7. From your Square Dashboard, choose where you want to connect your domain.

Once you complete all the steps, you’ll receive some important emails from your current host and from Square to take action on, including what’s known as a “Form of Authorization.” Be sure to read and follow the instructions in these emails to finalize the transfer process.

Your domain will remain active during the process. You can check the transfer progress from your Square Dashboard by going to Online > Websites > Website > Domains. We’ll send you an email to let you know when the transfer is finished, usually within 7–10 days.
