Set up and run your restaurant’s close of day report
About close of day reports
Your close of day report is the last report your managers may run for the day to close your restaurant. Setting up your close of day procedures helps make sure your team members complete all of the necessary tasks before ending their shifts or closing the restaurant.
You can customise requirements for the following actions:
Closing open bills
Adjusting tips
Totalling cash drawers
Clocking out team members
Your close-of-day report includes a full rundown of your numbers from your reporting day start time: bill details (bills comped, voided, etc), gross and net sales, payment methods, category sales and item sales. The covered time range is printed on the report so you can confirm exactly which period is included.
This is especially helpful if your restaurant is open past midnight, because the report window follows your reporting day setting rather than a calendar day. For example, if your reporting day starts at 6:00, the close of day report covers activity from 6:00 until you run it.
You can select which reporting fields appear on your printed and emailed close-of-day report. Even if your managers have not completed all of the required actions, you can override your customised requirements and run the close-of-day report.
Before you begin
Make sure your reporting day is configured correctly so the close-of-day report covers your full working day. Go to Reports > Settings > Reporting timeframes in Square Dashboard to review or update your reporting day start time. Your reporting day applies to every location on your account. If you haven’t set one, close of day uses each location’s opening hours (or 5:00 if none are set). Changing your reporting day also changes the day boundary in your Dashboard reports and, if you use end-of-reporting-day bill settlement, when bills settle. Learn how to Set up analytics and reporting.
Running your close of day will settle all card tips, and doesn’t account for fees accrued.
Team members can ensure close of day reporting is accurate by completing the following:
Fix all unadjusted tips: Running close of day will settle card tips for closed bills.
Close all open bills: Open bills won’t be included in your report.
Declare cash tips: If your staff are still clocked in, make sure they have declared any cash tips.
Closing procedure settings are location-specific, and you can only change these settings from your Square Dashboard.
Run your close of day report
Once your team members complete the required close-of-day procedures, you can run your close of day report from the Square Restaurant POS app or the Square Point of Sale app – only on Square Register or compatible iPads – with Full service, Quick service or Bar mode enabled.
Open your Point of Sale app and tap More > Close of day.
If required, you can close any open bills and cash drawers, adjust tips and clock team members out from the close of day preview.
Tap Run Close of Day > Run Close of Day.
Tap Print to print a copy of your close of day reports. To print your close of day report, your device must be connected to a receipt printer.
Customise your close of day procedures
When a team member is ready to complete a shift, they’ll need to run a shift report to view their card tips and cash owed to the house before clocking out.
Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Settings > Restaurant settings > Service settings.
Select Closing Procedures.
Under Close of Day settings, toggle your preferred close of day settings and reporting fields on.
Click Save.
