Set up customer email and text alerts for online store orders
About email and text alerts
As customers complete orders from your website, they can receive email and text alerts for real-time updates on their order's progress, as well as other alerts related to their items and carts.
Before you begin
To set up customer email and text alerts for orders from your website, you'll need to set up your site with Square. Learn how to set up your website.
When customers make a purchase through your online store, they’ll automatically receive email notifications at the email address they entered during checkout.
If you offer pickup, customers can receive a text message when you’ve received their order and when it’s ready for pickup.
If you offer in-house delivery, customers can sign up for text alerts to receive updates as their items get prepared and dispatched. If you offer on-demand delivery, you can enable text alerts that provide customers with a live map for real-time order tracking and updates.
Some text alert settings are only available with a Square Online Plus or Premium subscription, or a Square Plus or Premium subscription.
Set up email alerts
You can send an email notification to customers who’ve ordered from your Square Online site whenever you mark their order as ready or shipped. This setting will apply to all of your locations.
Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Websites.
Click Communications > Email & Text Alerts.
Under “Email notifications,” toggle on Email customer when their order is ready or shipped.
Set up text message alerts
Customers can receive text message updates about their pickup and delivery orders from your Square Online site. With a paid subscription, customers can also receive text alerts related to any order type. Additional text features include:
- Order placement confirmations
- Order status changes (like Ready for Pickup, Order Shipped, etc.)
- Customers can optionally text ‘HERE’ to announce they’ve arrived for curbside pickups
- Customers can optionally text you and you can reply with Square Messages
- Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Online.
- Click Communications > Email & Text Alerts.
- Under “Text message alerts,” toggle on Send order status text messages to customers.
When customers have been notified via text that their Square Online order is ready for pickup, they can respond with “HERE” to the text message alert when they’ve arrived at your location. You’ll see that the customer has arrived through a notification on your point of sale with the order information displayed. The order can then be brought out to the customer and be marked as complete.
- Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Settings > Account & Settings > Fulfillment methods > Online pickup & delivery.
- Click Advanced Settings.
- Toggle on On-POS arrival alerts.
- Click Save.
