Enable card network sounds
About card network sounds
Square Point of Sale offers audio cues to help you and your team stay informed during transactions. Payment sounds include:
Card network sounds — When a customer pays with a Visa or Mastercard, the Square app plays the corresponding branded audio tone at the completion of a transaction.
Declined payment speaker cue — An optional tone that plays through your device speaker when a card payment is declined. This is helpful in noisy or multi-station environments where you may not hear the reader buzzer.
You can enable or disable each sound independently from your payment sounds settings.
Before you begin
You can enable card network sounds on Square hardware, including Square Register, Square Stand, Square Terminal, and Square Readers. You cannot set card network sounds for Square apps on smartphones that aren’t connected to a Square Reader.
Enable card network sounds
- From your Square app, tap ≡ More.
- Tap Settings > Checkout > Payment sounds.
- Toggle Allow card network sounds on or off.
Enable payment declined sounds
Payment declined sounds are off by default. When enabled, an audio cue plays each time a card payment is declined. You can choose to play the cue via the card reader, through your device speaker, or both.
From your Square app, tap ≡ More.
Tap Settings > Checkout > Payment sounds.
Toggle Declined payment speaker cue on.
Under Payment declined sounds, toggle Play decline cue via reader on or off. Toggle Play decline cue through device speaker on or off. Under Speaker volume, select Low, Medium, or High to control the decline cue volume. Tap Preview sound to hear the cue at your selected volume.
